Work and training stories
Hear from people who we've helped to learn new skills, get work experience and find a job.
Susan had been out of work since 2008 following 3 hip operations that left her with limited mobility.
It was very depressing being at home all the time. I didn’t think I would get into work again.
Susan heard about local florists Lillian Rose Flowers at an open day organised by Papworth Trust which allowed prospective employers to meet jobseekers. Susan was invited to interview, and told her potential employer that she had difficulty walking long distances.
I can’t walk very far so this job is perfect for me as I am answering the phone and taking orders. If I did need support I know that everyone in the office would help me.
Susan was offered an initial 2 week work trial and is now permanently employed.
It’s just so different being back at work, it makes you feel better knowing you can go and do your job and you haven’t got to worry about anything. It's made a difference having understanding employers.
Ben, Kitchen Assistant at KFC
Ben had been out of work for 5 years when he applied for a job at KFC. With the support of his employment adviser at Papworth Trust, Ben found work as a Kitchen Assistant where he prepares food and cleans.
When I was unemployed I felt useless, I had periods of depression. I applied for jobs but when people found out that I was autistic I was instantly dismissed.
Having the support of the team at KFC and Papworth Trust made me relax. It gave me a bit more time to understand what I was doing and work through it. On my first day I was really nervous and kept thinking - will I be able to do this? How will I get through this day? But then halfway through, I realised I could get through the day, and the next and the next.
Now, I can feel my confidence rising and I am able to learn new skills. People in the team point me in the right direction, and support me wherever they can so I can work more quickly.
At KFC, it’s good having the regional manager James around as I know there’s always a friendly face.
Jon was unemployed and wanted a job but was very shy and apprehensive. After the training he did at Papworth Trust his confidence grew, he gained skills and experience, and got his dream job at N2S (who provide an IT security and data protection service).
Kyle got a job with our support. We helped him realise what he could do and what skills he had that he could use for a living. Kyle is now employed full time and says it's changed his life.
